Bunny’s Shade Garden

A garden nestled beneath century-old trees at the entrance to the bridle path, dedicated to shade plants. A real horticultural challenge, met with more than 35 different varieties, chosen for their ability to thrive away from direct sunlight.

Between Doreen’s Garden and Daria’s Garden lies a shaded 730 m² area, divided into four sections by a central path. Designed as a tribute to the seasons, this Shade Garden brings together more than 35 varieties and 1,320 plants, offering a subtle contrast between the vibrant spring and the peaceful fall, thanks to the shapes and colors of its foliage and flowers.

The season begins with the delicate Easter rose (Helleborus orientalis), with shades ranging from purple to smoky pink. Next come two Bleeding Hearts (Dicentra spectabilis and spectabilis alba), with white or pink flowers shaped like small heart-shaped bells. Hostas, famous for their decorative foliage, add volume with their clusters of discreet flowers. Aquilegia, nicknamed “fairy flowers,” raise their elegant stems in late spring. No shady garden would be complete without ferns: here, Dryopteris filix-mas and Matteuccia struthiopteris (bracken fern), among the oldest plant species, occupy a place of honor. Along the path, Vinca major displays its robust blue flowers, accompanied by Pulmonaria angustifolia ‘Azuria’, whose pink buds open into bluish flowers. Formerly used to treat lung conditions, this plant owes its name to its medicinal properties.

Pink ‘Matu Vu’ hybrid geraniums punctuate the flowerbeds and create a gentle botanical harmony.
Digitalis purpurea, or purple foxglove, adds verticality and bright colors, while attracting bumblebees, for which it is a valuable ally. It shares this space with other medicinal plants, such as Rheum palmatum.

Finally, a few rare varieties enrich this shade garden: Astrantia major, or great masterwort, and Cornus canadensis, with delicate iridescent white flowers, bring up the rear of this botanical walk that is at once intimate, informative, and poetic.
